Greek Shakespeare
The earliest collection, consisting of seven plays, was published by D. Manolis in Constantinople in 1873-74. Five other collections appeared in Athens including: five tragedies translated by Demetrios Vikelas in 1876-82, another five tragedies translatd by Angelos Vlachos in 1904-5, and twent-one plays translated by Michael Damiralis in 1928-29. After the War some dozen of Rotas' translations were published by Ikaros, in collaboration with the British Council, in 1949-55; another six plays translated by Klearchos Karthaios were published in 1962. Vassilis Rotas, in collaboration with Voula Daminakou, completed the translation of all 37 plays. This collection was published by Ikaros in 1974 and in in subsequent years. Dimitrios Bikelas (1835-1908), first president of the

Vikelas "had published poetry, works on the History of
Byzantium and Medieval Greece, translated the most important
of Shakespeare's dramas in modern Greek verse, and had
written but not yet published Loukis Laras. And after
he left London to settle in Athens, he devoted himself to a
variety of good works and interests, among which was the
revival of the ancient Olympic Games. thanks to his efforts
the revival became a reality, and the first modern Olympic
games were held in Athens in 1986."

Nikos Kazantzakis (1883 - 1957). His best-known novel,
Zorba the Greek, was made into a popular and highly
successful movie (1964). The Last Temptation of Christ
explored the theme of the battle between spirit and
flesh. The book was banned by Vatican in 1954.

Constantinos Theotokis (1872-1923), a
member of the Corfu Literary School, was a novelist.
Theotokis is considered the initiator of the social and
naturalistic novel in Greece. He translated four plays into modern
Greek.
