SHAKESPEARE'S CHILDREN / CHILDREN'S SHAKESPEARES

11th and 12th OCTOBER 2003

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SURREY ROEHAMPTON, LONDON UK

sponsored by

The Centre for Research in Renaissance Studies / The National Centre for Research in Children's Literature / The Schools of Arts, English and Modern Languages, and Humanities and Cultural Studies

The child as agent, symbol, witness or victim is a recurrent preoccupation in Shakespeare's work. Children also occupied a pivotal role in the cultures of performance of early modern England. In the following centuries Shakespeare has also been constantly remade for and by children, in books, pictures, plays and films, and within the educational curriculum world-wide. This groundbreaking international conference brings together leading scholars and critics from a wide range of disciplines, writers, illustrators and film and theatre practitioners, together with those interested in the history and culture of childhood to explore these matters in both historical and contemporary settings. It will investigate what the child meant and what it meant to be a child for Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and trace the ways in which Shakespeare has functioned subsequently in education, performance and popular culture.
