Conference Aims:
This conference is a continuation of a series of meetings
devoted to Shakespeare in Europe that for the last fifteen
years have been organized in different European countries.
The previous conferences were held in Antwerp (1990), Sofia
(1993), Murcia (1999), Basel (2001) and Utrecht (2003) and
concentrated on various aspects of Shakespeare's presence in
Europe. The major aim of this conference is to explore both
history in Shakespeare's work and Shakespeare in history, in
various European contexts. The conference will focus on
relations between Shakespeare's Histories and the history of
Europe, on European history as source and theme of
Shakespeare's work, as well as on European appropriations of
the history plays. It will study Shakespearean criticism in
its relation to European history. It will also address
issues concerning Shakespeare's place and function in
cultural and political history of individual nations and the
ways Shakespeare has been used in theatre, education and
cultural politics on different stages of European history.
The notion of memory is proposed as the key concept in the
debate on Shakespeare in European history. In this context,
memory offers itself for exploration and definition as the
main factor in shaping history, as determiner of identity,
and subject of political manipulation.
