Albrecht, Jaroslav

Two Gentlemen of Verona

Anonymous (1790-1800)

The first anonymous translation of Hamlet from about 1790-1800, derived from the popular German adaptation of F. L. Schroeder and F. Heufeld with an alternative and happy ending. Besides being at least the fifth derivation from Shakespeare's play (through the modifications of the German translations of Wieland and Eschenburg, Heufeld, Schroeder and the Hungarian translation of F. Kazinczy), this Slovak text is, unlike the German ones, marked by a new textual interpolation by its adaptors: by pure patriarchal intervention (old Hamlet being poisoned by his wife Gertrude, indicating and reinforcing the patriarchal tradition of woman being the found of all evil) and by socially imposed self censorship (the sharply cut scenes of the grave-diggers).

Michal Bosy (1780-1847) made a translation of Hamlet into "archaic biblical Czech" (the language of the Bible translation made by the Moravian Brethren in the latter half of the sixteenth century and used until mid-nineteenth century by the Protestant churches in Slovakia) "tinged with current Slovak words" by Michal Bosy', a student of A.W. Schlegel at the University of Jena.

Hamlet
The first three complete translations (anonymus, 1790-1800; M. Bosy', 1810-30; P. Dobsinsky', 1850) remained unpublished manuscripts until as late as 1964-66, even though Michal Bosy''s poetic translation was a unique and unprecedented work in verse in the Hungarian Monarchy."

Hviezdoslav, Pavol Orszagh (1903)

"It was not until 1903 that one of the greatest Slovak poets, P. O. Hviezdoslav, with a full grasp of its language, translated Hamlet. Hviezdoslav endeavoured to be as faithful to the text as possible while conveying the meaning, and he managed to mediate Shakespeare's language in an almost Baroque-like manner of metaphoric hypertrophy, while inventing new words, adding and doubling the original expressions. Making the verse and the language quite complex, his semantic translation is 30 per cent longer than the original, and is, in a strong sense, a deviation from the original. Nevertheless, it is a pioneering work of translation within Slovak culture."

Kot, Jozef (1973)

Jozef Kot, Hamlet (1973)
"Since the 1970's, the monopoly Slovak translation of Hamlet has been Jozef Kot's (1973) with its five reeditions within the last two decades (most recently 1994)"
"For ideological reasons but also due to his elevated political position during the Communist regime, Kot's translations of Shakespeare (19 plays altogether) and Hamlet have been labelled „modern", and have set the reception standards of at least two generations of both Slovak readership and audience."
