"Reference must be made, in conclusion, to the great
interest which Hungarians have always shown in the English
poet, and the powerful influence he has exerted on their
literature. A very high rank among translations of
Shakespeare is claimed for those by the eminent poet
Charles Kisfaludy, especially for that of Julius
Caesar. "

The first Hungarian translation of a Shakespeare play was a
prose translation from a German text of Hamlet in 1790. In
the next hundred years to come, as a result of much
enthusiasm and dedication devoted to giving birth to our
very own Hungarian Shakespeare, all the thirty-five plays
from the first Folio, and Troilus and Cressida and
Pericles were translated and published. Then, already
in the 20th century, an ardent man of letters called Dezso
Rózsa started to pursue research into predecessors
and contemporaries of Shakespeare.
