Shakespeare on the continent (general chronology) as a separate "sheet"

........

General Sites:

" Shakespeare appeared on the Turkish stage 140 years ago. Although a number of European, Greek and Armenian troupes had performed some of his works earlier, the first Turkish-language production of a play by Shakespeare took place in 1860 when 'Othello' was offered. The earliest Turkish translations to come out in book form were 'The Merchant of Venice` and 'The Comedy of Errors`, published in 1885 and 1886 respectively. The Bard's influence was felt in the pioneering plays of Namy'k Kemal (1840-1888) and more decisively in the tragedies of Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan (1852-1937), a leading playwright in the 1875-1920 period. In early 20th Century, interest in Shakespeare grew with the widely popular Othello performances of Kamil Ry'za (who actually came to be known as "Othello Kamil") and particularly after the publication of Dr. Abdullah Cevdet's translations of the major tragedies between 1908 and 1912"
" By the year 2000, all of the plays had been rendered into Turkish, except three: "Pericles", "King John" and "Love's Labour's Lost".
"King Lear" has four versions, "Macbeth" five, "Hamlet" seven and "Othello" nine versions.
"In 1887-1888 Mehmed Nadir published 42 of the Sonnets in prose versions. In 1964 Talat Sait Halman produced a book featuring his verse translations of 40 Sonnets. Dr. Saadet Bozkurt and Dr. Bülent Bozkurt published the first book the Complete Sonnets in prose translation in 1979 and reissued it in 1994. The first and only volume of the Complete Sonnets translated in full meter and rhyme is by Talat Sait Halman -- "Tüm Soneler" (1989) which has had five printings. "

a 'Shakespeare Seminar', led by Ady'var and Vahit Turhan produced a series of Shakespeare translations in the 1940s and 1950s. These translations, which aimed for linguistic simplicity, in order to communicate the plays' humane values (even if that meant using prose rather than verse), included commentaries, notes and lengthy critical introductions; and ultimately helped to initiate serious scholarship in Turkey. Hamlet (1941) was the first translation of the play to be rendered from English sources; it was used in a production in the same year that ran in Istanbul for a record-breaking fifty performances (Paker 1986: 98).
